PayPal did the same in early 2000's.
Cool video but Ellis himself found that the product had abysmally high approval from its users. So, is it any wonder whatever marketing mumbo-jumbo he did, had a huge success?
250 MB was not “the equivalent of a hard-drive's worth of storage ” in 2008. I think you meant 250 GB, and Dropbox wasn't offering that much space

what a waste of time
Dropbox was a great utility and stayed out of peoples way and worked in the background… and it WORKED. Unlike skydrive (now onedrive), which was a poor cousin. it didnt need too much “growth hacking” because it took an existing idea and improved on it so much that added tons of value to peoples lives.
