What’s new in NorthStar — Q3’2019

To keep up with our commitment to being (a) transparent, (b) customer-centric and (c)constantly improving our approach on the product side of GrowthHackers.com, I want to share with you everything we’ve worked on during this last quarter.
Before we get into that, I just want to share the way we decide our priorities. It’s simple and straight forward and based on two factors: (1) customers’ points of view and (2) mission and vision point of view. But what does that mean? Well, (1) when there are multiple customers requesting something new and we also understand that it would be useful for other customers (even if they haven’t specifically requested it) and (2) the request matches our product vision, the changes we want to make in our industry and the future of growth — that’s it!

Without further ado, here are our fresh new releases:

API

One of the most upvoted features on our backlog ever is finally alive: our first API.
The V1.API will enable users to extract data from NorthStar and send it anywhere else.
This has been frequently requested by multiple companies managing multiple products with multiple teams.
We completely see where they were coming from: it was hard to automatically generate reports of multiple growth teams across the organization in an easy way — there you go, you can now export any of these events.
Here’s a quick illustration of our CPO creating an automated report:

Custom Growth Levers

Growth teams navigate across departments — breaking silos — and are responsible for the company as a whole, not only acquisition, not only activation, not only retention. By the way, the whole idea behind a NorthStar Metric is exactly that, to unify and unite the company around one single KPI.

Although in its beginning growth was done mostly by tech companies, this is long gone. Nowadays, we have customers in every industry, every segment, and every country on earth. Just as growth as a methodology evolves, the process and tools used to manage that growth need to catch up.

This brings us to the customizable Growth Levers. Meaning you can create, delete, edit, change all the default growth levers that used to be fixed. Here are a few examples:

To customize your growth levers, simply go to your preferences (on bottom of your left menu bar) and start customizing it:

Now let’s say that the HR departments need the growth team’s help to hire 200 new employees over the next quarter, they can simply filter their whole idea backlog based on the growth lever HR:

Or, let’s say that by the end of the year, your CEO wants to know where most of your growth resources have been dedicated to. You can simply go to the Health feature and check that out:

Related Cards

Have you ever had an idea for a new test based on a test you executed before (learning)? Or, let’s say that instead of running one big experiment for 2 months, you break that down into 4 smaller experiments of two weeks, but they are all inter-connected and dependent on one another?
Well, those cases happen very frequently and with that in mind, we are proud to announce the Related Cards function:

To link a card with another, all you need is the card’s name OR the card key. Whenever you start to type, we will show you the most relevant search answers and, once you connect it, it will work both ways. You can also link multiple cars in one!

Never lose track of your experiments again and feel free to create a “package” of tests at any time!

UI, UX, and other Improvements

1. Global Settings: as more and more global companies managing multiple brands, multiple products, multiple growth teams join us in the journey, the challenges of managing them all while still keep control of things appeared and the Global Settings are the first step in that direction.

2. Tag Management: set up standard TAGs across the organization and products, making it easier to search for new ideas and/or old learnings all while avoiding any typos.
Ps: a lot of our customers use internal codes to organize old campaigns, this is where you insert all of those codes and never miss a piece of information again.

Workflow

The most commented, followed and favorited tag on our community is #contentmarketing.
The second most used tag on experiments executed through NorthStar is #contentmarketing (right behind #a/b-test).
Content is also what drives the community, the university, the growth-ideas, the AMAs.

Always with our users’ needs in mind, we are launching a new product to help you manage the entire process of content management. It follows a similar structure for different usage:

Strategy: map out personas, keywords, buyers journey, tone of voice;
Ideation: prepare and approve your editorial line;
Creation: in-app-editor for blog posts, social posts and more;
Publication: drag-and-drop editorial calendar with native integrations;
Analysis: SEO analysis, social shares, analytics integration and more.
