Do you understand the mystery of content?

After months of my website being live, I didn’t either.

No really, I didn’t!

What is Content Marketing?

“Content” is such a vague word, amiright?

When I began learning online marketing, the word “content” was all over the place. However, when I tried to reconcile the word content, with marketing, it was tough. All I could picture was unzipping my purse and emptying the “contents” on the kitchen table.

So what does that have to do with marketing?

According to the Content Marketing Institute the definition goes something like this:

“Content marketing is a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly defined audience — and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action.”

What a great concept! Instead of being a never-ending infomercial or pitch to your prospects, you provide useful information to them answering questions and solving their problems.

How to Use Content Marketing in Your Business

It can be hard to reverse your thinking when it comes to promoting your business. Many people wonder what the value is in giving so much away for free, with no mention of their offer!

The first thing you must understand is content marketing is a long-term commitment. By sharing content (“all the things”) and helpful information, you will build a strong loyal relationship with your prospect, and when it comes time to buy your product, your business will be at the top of their mind.

#1 Build Trust

The best way to attract and retain a group of raving customers (fans) is to build their trust in you. You can do this by taking the time to research their questions and offering solutions to them. Answer their questions in a video, blog post or email and share to your list.

If you are being consistent and always putting the customer first, eventually the sales will roll in, because when your prospect needs to purchase a product that you sell, they know who to turn to.

Speaking of trust, what better way can you build that trust by showing your customer EXACTLY how to get the most out of your product? (or implement your service) Sharing instructional videos and other content is a sure way to make sure your customer is happy, and better yet, keep them from returning your product.

#3 Showcase your personality

The easiest way we can showcase our personality to our customers is to tell stories. Everyone loves stories! According to Smart Bird Social, your audience wants to connect with you, not your business. It’s much easier to “know, like and trust” a person, than a corporate logo, don’t you think?

It’s tough to come out of the old school, and begin to show people’s faces in your business, rather than spouting the benefits of your product or service. But, to compete in today’s very crowded marketplace, it’s imperative that you come up with a unique angle. Many times that quality lives within your own unique personality.
