A fake meme is being shared on social media claiming that Article 54 of Obamacare coming into effect on May 1, 2018 and will result in 30 percent of social security being taken away from people over 60 so that it can then be given to insurance for undocumented immigrants. There is no truth to a meme shared on social media that social security filers would be losing part of their benefits as a result of an article in the Affordable Care Act taking it away to give to undocumented immigrants.

Where did this fake meme originate? A Facebook page called “America – Love It Or Leave It” published the fake meme on April 14, 2018, claiming that social security filers would be losing 30 percent of their benefits due to Article 54 in the Affordable Care Act which would give those benefits as insurance to undocumented immigrants. You can see the fake meme below.

On May 1st, 2018 article 54 of Obamacare will take effect.

Anyone over 60 will have 30 percent of their social security diverted to funding for insurance for the undocumented.

However, there is no truth to the above meme. What is the problem with the fake meme? There is no Article 54 in the Affordable Care Act. The comprehensive health care reform law enacted in March 2010 to make affordable health insurance available to more people. The meme also cleverly uses a photo of former President Barack Obama which appears that he is flipping off Americans.

Enrolling in Medicaid or an Obamacare plan does not hurt immigrants’ chances of gaining permanent residency in the United States. That might change soon, under a major policy shift the Trump administration is considering that could curtail legal immigration. Clinics that serve immigrant populations are anxiously watching the White House’s budget office, where sources say the proposed changes are likely headed for consideration and are expected to be released before July 2018.

Here are some examples of people sharing the fake meme on social media.

Finally, and most importantly, the Facebook page carries the following disclaimer:

Nothing on this page is real. It is a collection of the satirical whimsies of liberal trolls masquerading as conservatives. You have been warned.

As Maarten Schenk of Lead Stories noted, “America – Love It Or Leave It” is a Facebook page run by Christopher Blair, how has created many fake news websites that publish fake news articles meant to fool and troll conservatives and President Donald Trump supporters into liking and sharing.

What did you think of the fake meme saying Article 54 of Obamacare would be taking away social security benefits to citizens in exchange for insurance to undocumented immigrants? Did you believe the fake meme or see people sharing it falsely on social media? Let us know in the comments section.
