— Ah… Bikini Bottom. If you didn’t read this sentence in a very slow pace and with a French accent, this article might not be for you. Fear not, my friend, the whole idea of this piece of text here is to prove that there’s quality in art even in the deepest coral reef.

Netflix and all the fast video-on-demand services have proved us that more than ever, we like to Binge-watch things constantly, non-stop, non-blinking-stop, and well, that’s fine. I’ve been so hooked in that feeling in the past years that I got used to first set my Netflix series before even start cooking. I also need to admit that it is easier nowadays to watch something easy and mind-numbing than the really hard European movies that I loved to watch in the past. Is so damn hard to find those cult movies there, all among those easy-to-watch movies and series there that I must admit that I feel lazy to browse too much on Netflix to find something — what some people just love to do, instead to just watch something.

In the middle of all this, there’s this little fella, square-shaped, that hooked me in the past months and I had to talk about the experience that I had with it. Since I started to work remotely, I discovered that having at the same time and same place bedroom and office can for sure make someone claustrophobic sometimes. I also like to work with some background noise and always have something playing around. One day it happened that for some reason I let the Netflix on and went to work and what was on was SpongeBob Squarepants. At first, I didn’t even realize that I had the TV on until I heard SpongeBob’s laugh, echoing slowly in the room and taking my full attention. I had to have a break and watch the episode until the end. After that episode, I experienced to let SpongeBob there in the background for the rest of the day. It was such a good experience. The episodes are short, fast-paced, not linked to another and you don’t actually need to pay attention to know what’s going on. This was such a productive experience for me at the end because, see, those episodes for sure make you feel good. And that’s what sometimes is all you need. There’s nothing dark, down or really deep in the cartoon that would make your stressed day worse, on the contrary, everytime that I need a break from stress, SpongeBob was there, cheering me up with feel-good energy that only the show — that turns 20 next year — can offer.

I believe that the main character’s ideology is also one of the main reasons for the show’s success and the fact that it’s so Binge-watchable. “SpongeBob itself is earnest, and earnest people are, by turns, sweet and aggravating, a point that deftly drives much of the show’s conflict”, points out this another article that pulls out an entire case for Binge-watching Spongebob Squarepants. Add to this a cast of secondary characters with exquisite quirks and a dash of humanity and you have one of the most memorable cartoons of all the times.

With more than 230 episodes aired so far, at its 11th season and a third movie on the making, SpongeBob Squarepants and its crew are far from losing its breath and what can I say about that? “Aye Aye, Captain!”.
