The world has turned digital and we find ourselves screaming in the chaos of the internet. And, we seek compensation for our efforts. The bill collectors keep coming. Your question is one that I am working through as well, let’s see if we can come up with a strategy together.

Let’s dissect your question:

How do I stand out as a copywriter in a sea of copywriters?

  • You want to stand out.
  • You are a copywriter.
  • You are in fierce competition.

We will need more questions to come up with a plan that works. These next questions delve deeper into the initial ones.

  • Who is in your network?
  • What are they interested in?
  • Where do they hang out? (social media sites)
  • Why do they socialize there?
  • How do they take their entertainment? (blogs, infographics, videos)
  • What things do they share? (posts, retweets, etc)
  • If you could have the perfect network, what would it look like?

I have heard that our networks are a reflection of our worth. A few days ago, I started making a list of influential people I know. These individuals are movers and shakers. They always see things from an unpopulated vista. They are disgruntled with the way things are, so they cause disruption in the fabric of society. They change or create new populaces. They maneuver in the world of business, entertainment, art, religion, and politics.

If you know individuals like this, you are ahead of the game. If not?, you must populate your list with these kinds of characters. Why?, you ask. Because, they are making things happen. And, they need help communicating their message.

Start with your immediate resources. Study your connections on LinkedIn and Facebook. I am sure you have several friends that you know very little about. See what they are up to. Become curious about their lives. Reach out to them, not to make a sale, but to interact like humans. Ask questions. Seek advice from them. Once you have built honest rapport, offer them your skills, free of cost — up to a point. Create value for them, make them ask for more. Remember, the worst that can happen is that you make a new friend.

That is the immediate answer of how to stand out. Become a friend to your acquaintances online. By taking interest in them, they will learn about you. Be personal, be transparent. Your vulnerability is your best sales tool. Empathy is the key to standing out. It is also the key ingredient in all great stories.

You have many skills as a copywriter. But, if you focus on learning to listen, you will find yourself standing on the summit. Become a great observer. Look at everything as an opportunity to discover something new. Ask many questions. Empty your head of misconceived notions, beliefs, and teachings. Be an empty page. Let everyone you meet tell you their story. Let them enjoy your company. Let them share with you their secrets. Be confidential always.

Go ahead, introduce yourself as a copywriter. In truth you are a philosopher, psychologist, and storyteller. You must be able to see and feel things as they do to tell their stories. THEY — are your paying clients. Remember, great listeners are always invited back. People consider them to be the best conversationalists — oh, the irony. You become valuable to them, and they do not mind paying for your skills.

With empathy you become the best storyteller you can be. Open your ears, your mind, and your heart — listen. Once you understand their pain, you can tell their story.

As for the competition, you just abolished it.

In conclusion:

Reach out to people in your network.

Become a friend and a valuable resource.

Improve your skills in observation, listening, and problem-solving.

Tell the best-personal stories everywhere.
