7 Places To Find Free Photographs & Graphics For Your Blog Posts

Incorporating photos in your posts improves readership and digestibility. Here’s a list of websites to acess images free for use in your writing.

1. Unsplash
Founded 4 years ago as a humble Tumblr blog, Unsplash has grown into an industry-leading photography community. It’s become a source of inspiration for everyone from award-winning writers like Deepak Chopra to industry-titans like Apple, and millions of creators worldwide.”

That’s quite an accurate description of stock-photo website Unsplash. It’s one of the most popular places to find photos for commercial use, and I’ve seen their images frequently used here on Medium.

2. Pexels
Pexels is another one of the web’s most popular stock-photo sites, and even though the photos offered are quite similar in style to those of Unsplash, Pexels also offer videos free for commercial use.

3. Pixabay
Pixabay has a wider variety when it comes to the photo quality. Many photos are just as high-quality as if they were from Unsplash or Pexels, whereas some have that typical ‘stock-photo-ish’ feel to them.

A huge benefit of Pixabay is that they don’t only offer stock photos — here’s the place for you to find illustrations, vector graphics and videos.

4. The Art Institute of Chicago
Using regular stock-photos on your site is all fine and dandy. But sometimes you want something that either stands out more than usual, or is more inline with your writing.

That’s when you might want to consider The Art Institute of Chicago. They offer over 50 000 free, public domain images of art from throughout history.

Here, you can get access to the work of artists like Van Gogh and Manet, free for use in commercial projects.

5. PicMelon
PicMelon is a handpicked source of high quality license-free pictures for designers and bloggers. They also provide bundles with different themes — for example “Boats and Yachts” and “Business” — you can download for free.

6. Metropolitan Museum Of Art
Just like The Art Institute of Chicago, this is a great resource for finding artwork of any kind. You’ll find anything from Late Imperial, Roman glass sculptures to Rembrandt in the public domain.

7. The British Library
Want some antique book illustrations and beautiful typography included in your content? Try looking in The British Library’s Flick feed for unique, free-to-use artwork.

This was just a small collection of my preferred resources. Do you recommend any other stock-photo sites? Tell us in the comments!
