3 Reasons Why I Suck at Instagram Marketing

Three make or break habits for your personal branding

I created a new business account on Instagram in January and I’ve been working on growing my following there ever since.

To my surprise, growing a serious following isn’t quite as easy as giving yourself a shout-out on your main account, you actually have to be good at it.

6 months and 117 followers later, I decided to have a look at what other people in my position are doing, and that’s when it hit me…

I’m doing a LOT wrong

Unlike on my personal Instagram account, these followers aren’t my friends. They won’t engage unless they care about the content. They also don’t know me personally so they’ll need context behind certain photos and captions.

Alas, let’s talk about the 3 main things that I’ve been getting wrong this whole time, then we can work on how to start fixing them.

PROVIDE VALUE!

This is by far the most important trait to develop when it comes to personal branding and possibly the easiest to get wrong.

Everyone’s a personal blogger or a public figure with a brand of themselves. Everyone’s a vlogger, rapper or entrepreneur asking people to follow them for being them.

No one’s providing value for the people they hope to influence

When studying other pages on Instagram, I had to ask myself… Why should someone follow me?

They shouldn’t.

I don’t offer them anything or provide them with any value. As a business, with a product of content and a currency of attention, my content asks for such little attention to be paid.

A picture of a burger, for example, isn’t an example of great content when it comes to paying attention, thought it may get a couple tummies rumbling!

If 80% of your photos and stories aren’t providing value for your followers, you’re doing it wrong.

Engage with the community

Now this extends way beyond just responding to followers in the comments, as you also have to go out of your way to find other people in the same industry and make an effort to engage with them too.

This includes liking and commenting on other people’s pictures, DMing people, offering your services and generally being an active member of the community you hope to influence.

No one wants to be told what to do by a stranger

This is the easiest way to get your name out there and around the community. If you treat the comments section as a party and only add positive vibes down there, you’re credibility will increase ten fold when people see you around!

You have to play the game to change the game.

Only by being a part of the family can you really work your way to the top and begin to have a real lasting influence on these people.

Collaborate

This seems like a bit of a wild card and at first, for me at least, it was difficult to see how collaborating could really have a real impact on your brand, but let me explain why it’s important.

In a way this goes hand in hand with engaging with the community, but we’re now taking this concept to new heights by directly leveraging the audiences of other people in your industry.

People are more likely to follow you if their favourite influencer advocates it

Aim to collaborate with someone with a similar audience, this way you can be sure knowing that your content is relevant to them, too, and will provide them with value.

Genuine industry friends can make or break your career.

By accessing their audience directly, you’re effective giving a sales pitch to potentially millions of people. Use this opportunity to provide as much value as possible and take as much from the experience as you can.

Adopt a winning “give and take” mentality. You want the lime light on someone else’s page, but what can you give them?

If, like me, you’re a small creator with a small following, understand you have little to no leverage other than your perspective. Make sure you give more than you take while ensuring you take a lot, capiche?
